How to pay for medical school: United States Uniformed Health Services (USUHS)

September 10, 2012 by Don Osborne Leave a Comment

Graduating from medical school debt free is an impossible dream, but there are several scholarship programs provide full ride scholarships to medical school. USUHS is one of the two most well-known ways to go to med school for free. By applying to and getting accepted at USUHS, your medical education will be paid for by the US military. You will also become a commissioned officer in the military and in order to pay for your medical education, you are committing to serve at least seven years in active duty plus approximately four years in residency, for a total of eleven years of commitment AFTER you complete your four-year medical education.

While you are in the program, you will receive the pay of a commissioned officer (approximately 50k per year).

This may not be your happiest option, for two reasons: 1) you have to join the military, and 2) USUHS is a VERY competitive medical school that is VERY difficult to get in to. Some stats:

  • 1908 applicants, 170 positions (11:1 applicant-to-position)
  • 506 were interviewed
  • Average science GPA: 3.5
  • Average overall MCAT: 30
  • 60% of entrants had no military experience

If becoming a doctor and a military officer is your thing, than USUHS is right for you. If the USUHS doesn’t seem like your thing, there are still five other ways to go to medical school for free.
